Tyumen State University - the first university in the Tyumen region, was opened in 1930. It trains specialists in 175 areas of training. The University is among the participants of Project 5-100, a program to increase the international competitiveness of Russian universities among the world's leading scientific and educational centers. The university has 15 buildings in the historical part of the city. The university includes 15 educational institutions, including the Institute of Distance Education and the Regional Institute for International Cooperation, branches in the cities of Tobolsk and Ishim, as well as representative offices in the cities of Gubkinsky, Noyabrsk, Surgut and Petropavlovsk (Kazakhstan). The total number of students is 27,000 people. Over 1,900 international students from 43 countries. The total number of employees is more than 2,000 people.

Tyumen State University is a participant in international network projects for the study of climate change, land use and biodiversity, including in the Arctic: SASCHA with a consortium of German universities under a grant from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research in 2011-2016, KlimEco under a grant from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and Academies of Finland 2018-2020, "Smart Communities in the Arctic Region" under the grant of the Government of Norway 2018-2021, "SODEEP" with a consortium of European universities 2019-2021, "SERUS" under the grant of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Belmont Forum 2020-2022 year. It is a member of the consortium of organizations of the international project ELIPS-4 of the European Space Agency (ESA). Scientific expeditions, in addition to Western Siberia, are carried out in Australia, Mexico, Chile, South Africa on grants from the Russian Science Foundation and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. In 2019, Tyumen State University carried out research projects on 73 grants from various foundations.
