Polotsk State University is a higher educational institution in the Republic of Belarus. Educational buildings are located in the cities of Polotsk and Novopolotsk. Higher education in Polotsk has a long tradition. In 1581, a Jesuit collegium was founded in Polotsk. On January 12, 1812, by the Decree of the Russian Emperor Alexander I, the Collegium was transformed into the Polotsk Jesuit Academy with the rights of a university. The Academy operated during 1812-1820 and was the first institution of higher education on the territory of modern Belarus. The emergence of the first humanitarian specialties, and most importantly, the need for highly qualified personnel for the economy of the region and the country as a whole raised the question of the need for a significant restructuring of the university. By the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No. 618 dated September 14, 1993, the Novopolotsk Polytechnic Institute was transformed into Polotsk State University. In this regard, there have been significant changes in the structure of the educational institution.
The impetus for the further development of PSU was given by a visit to the university in 2001 by the President of the Republic of Belarus A. G. Lukashenko. In accordance with the Protocol of Instructions of the Head of State dated September 1, 2001, the Ministry of Defense transferred to the university a complex of buildings of the Jesuit Collegium. In February 2003, a solemn handover of the historic buildings took place. Thus, teachers and students of PSU became the owners of one of the oldest university campuses in the post-Soviet space and the oldest one in Belarus. Now the Polotsk site of the university houses the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Information Technology. Since 2016, the Faculty of Law and the Department of Physical Education and Sports of the Faculty of Humanities have their own campus in the village of Mezhdurechye. The Regional Educational-Scientific-Practical Legal Center operates on the same basis. In October 2017, the University, together with the Novopolotsk City Executive Committee and JSC Naftan, is an active participant in the innovation-industrial Novopolotsk petrochemical cluster, the creation of which is aimed at strengthening the connection between education, science and production and promoting the further development of the petrochemical industry, as well as other science-intensive and high-tech production.
